Why should brides have all the fun?
While the lion’s share of attention goes towards the bride’s wardrobe, it’s easy to overlook the sartorial needs of the groom and his groomsmen. But for fashion-conscious gents, there’s good news. Over the past few years, menswear has begun to evolve and take new shapes in different categories, from everyday casual wear to wedding wear. Speaking of the latter, we got to see it first-hand at the recently concluded FDCI Manifest Wedding Weekend.
Whether it was Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla’s label Mard, specifically designed for the new age man with classic silhouettes in shades of delicate ivory and bold reds and statement embellishments, Kunal Rawal’s latest collection ‘Sehra’ with embroideries of tapestries of Indian customs and rituals against the backdrop of homegrown textiles, FMWW had it all.
Here are a few trends that stood out for us at the exhibition…
From bandhgala suits, capes, sherwanis, tuxedos, Jodhpuris, kurtas to Nehru jackets, the colour blue and black could be seen reigning the palette of men’s fashion wear displayed at the event. The two colours were prominent in the showcases of designers like Kunal Rawal, Tarun Tahiliani, Gaurav Gupta, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna.
Madhav Agasti’s collection at the FMWW 2024 explored stunning surface embellishments through embroidery, while Gaurav Gupta’s ‘Arunodaya’ had mesmerising zardozi work for menswear. We also saw this emerge through collections of designers like Kunal Rawal, Tarun Tahiliani and JJ Valaya.
Expect to see drapes wrapped over sherwanis, kurtas and Achkans complementing ethnic ensembles this wedding season. At the FMWW 2024, we spotted asymmetrical drapes with delightful patterns and embroideries that can be experimented with, if you’re so inclined! Kunal Rawal, Tarun Tahiliani, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khsola’s Mard and Siddhart Tytler’s showcase featured some of the most magnificently designed drapes.
Pastels have become a mainstay for wedding wardrobes and this season is no different. While darker shades like blue dominated the colour palette of menswear at the FMWW this year, pastel hues were not far behind. Rahul Mishra and Tarun Tahiliani made a case for pastels with their respective showcases.
Although Achkans are a timeless classic when it comes to men’s ethnic wear, in the past few years, the accessory has seen a resurgence like never before. This year we saw them get elevated with the use of embroidery and colour in showcases of designers like Abu Jani and sandeep Khosla and Tarun Tahiliani.
