As the power couple celebrate their wedding anniversary, we take a walk down memory lane…
The Universe clearly knew what it was doing when it put Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone in each other’s path all the way back in 2012. The actors met for the first time at the Zee Cine Awards where the sight of Deepika in a silver gown resulted in Ranveer falling in love with her instantly.
Cut to a year later, the two came together onscreen for the first time for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram Leela. The movie was a success, especially because of the cackling chemistry shared by the leads. But this off-the-charts chemistry wasn’t limited to the beautifully designed sets of Bhansali’s film. The couple continued to deny the barrage of relationship rumours that followed them over the years, even as they reunited for two more Bhansali blockbusters. In 2018, Deepika and Ranveer hard launched their relationship on Instagram by posting an engagement announcement.
In November 2018, the couple flew to Lake Como, Italy, to get married in a beautiful medley of Konkani and Sindhi ceremonies, surrounded by their loved ones. The couple had enlisted the help of ace wedding planner Vandana Mohan, of The Wedding Design Company, to put together the two-day-long extravaganza in Italy.
On their sixth wedding anniversary, we decided to take a walk down memory lane and revisit all the details from their wedding that we loved…
The couple had secretly dated for six years before opening up about their relationship in public. Their wedding ceremony, too, was a private affair. The couple wanted an intimate wedding with just their friends and family in attendance and chose to share snapshots from the picturesque ceremony at their own discretion. This is why guests were made to cover their mobile phones’ cameras with stickers and patrolling powerboats were commissioned to chase away paparazzi.
Ranveer and Deepika whisked away their guests to Italy for the wedding. The couple took their vows with the backdrop of the stunning Lake Como landscape at Villa del Balbianello. The villa, which used to be a monastery in the 13th century, is a private property that can be accessed by foot or by boat from its private jetty. It even opens its doors to visitors to walk through the museum and its sprawling gardens. It’s famed for its beautiful antique furnishings, elaborate gardens and little romantic spaces, all of which make it the perfect venue for a fairytale wedding.
The couple’s intimate wedding featured many heartwarming details that made the wedding and pre-wedding ceremonies beautifully personalised for them. For the mehndi ceremony, Deepika called upon the services of Veena Nagda, who had also done the mehndi for the wedding portions of Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani. According to Veena, the actress had promised her during the filming of the movie that she would reach out to her whenever she decided to get married. The henna artist also revealed that Ranveer asked for Deepika’s initials to be drawn on his hand with mehndi. Another detail that we loved from the wedding was Deepika’s Sabyasachi lehenga featured the Sanskrit words ‘Sada Saubhagyavati Bhava’ written on the border, which translates to ‘May you always be lucky as a married woman’.
For their wedding, Deepika and Ranveer decided to honour their different cultural roots by throwing a two-day extravaganza comprising a Konkani and Sindhi wedding ceremony on each day. For the traditional Konkani ceremony, the couple exchanged varmalas and held a tikka ceremony. Post this, they shared a meal which was served on a banana leaf.
The Sindhi wedding ceremony featured the Anand Karaj ritual, including ardas and four pheras, which was followed by a grand lunch at the villa for the guests.
After a picture-perfect ceremony in Italy, the couple flew back home but the party was just getting started. Deepika’s parents kicked off the series of after-parties by hosting one at The Leela Palace Bengaluru. Deepika opted for a golden silk sari gifted by her mother and Ranveer went for a black and gold Rohit Bal sherwani.
This was followed by a party in Mumbai thrown by Ranveer’s sister, where Deepika went with a floral Sabyasachi lehenga (complete with a floral headpiece).
The couple then threw a reception in Mumbai for the media, where they twinned in gold once again. Deepika chose an ivory and gold Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla sari and Ranveer went with another Rohit Bal Sherwani.
For the final reception at The Grand Hyatt in Mumbai for their industry friends, the bride wore a custom red Zuhair Murad gown (with a stunning veil) and the groom went with a tux by Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna.
