The veteran designer chats with Manifest ahead of her showcase at the FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week this year…

October 12, 2024 | 2:03 PM // By Salva Mubarak

Monisha Jaising has been treading the fine line of fusion much before it became a contemporary trend. After launching her eponymous label in the 90s, the designer went on to carve a niche for herself in the Indian fashion landscape, first by reinventing the simple kurti and then by introducing bridal couture the likes Indian consumers had never seen before in 2013.

Her 2015 collection ‘Sailing Bride’ transported the beholder to a luxury yacht wedding, surrounded by chiffon, silk, organza and tulle in the shades of sea foam and corals. In 2024, Monisha Jaising is all set to reprise the magic of nearly a decade ago and present her collection ‘Sailing Bride 2.0’ at the FDCI X Lakmé Fashion Week.

Ahead of her showcase, the designer spoke to Manifest about her inspirations, the throwbacks we can expect at the showcase, the trousseau trends she envisions benign popular this time around and so much more. Read our chat here…

In Conversation With Monisha Jaising

Manifest: Tell us about what we can expect from ‘Sailing Bride 2.0’?

Monisha Jaising: With ‘Sailing Bride 2.0’, I wanted to capture the essence of a lifestyle that’s both elegant and adventurous. This collection reflects the freedom of being on the open water, where each piece is designed to flow effortlessly from casual daytime moments to more refined evening gatherings. It’s about embracing a sense of ease and sophistication while staying connected to the beauty of nature and the luxurious calm that sailing brings.

M: How has this evolved from the 2015 collection ‘Sailing Bride’? What are the throwbacks and differences that we can expect from the new collection?

MJ: ‘Sailing Bride 2.0’ has evolved from the 2015 collection in a way that feels more refined and adventurous. While the original focused on relaxed kaftans, this new collection introduces sheer Kurtis that captures the essence of relaxation and style for the modern woman. I’ve worked with fabrics like silk, satin, and chiffon to create pieces that effortlessly transition from sun-soaked lounging to chic evening gatherings. For formal occasions, my signature co-ord sets offer a modern alternative to traditional gowns, featuring cropped tops with high-waisted skirts adorned with sequins, as well as embellished bralettes paired with wide-leg pants. These bold, shimmering looks are perfect for making a statement at evening events.

M: What has been inspiring you to create and design these days?

MJ: Lately, I’ve been deeply inspired by the idea of balance—between luxury and ease, and between nature and adventure. The freedom and tranquillity of being by the sea have profoundly influenced my designs, along with how today’s women embrace versatility and fluidity in their wardrobes. I’m motivated by the desire to create pieces that seamlessly transition from day to night, accommodating both casual moments and more elegant occasions. It’s this blend of nature, luxury, and practicality that’s driving my creativity right now.

M: What should brides and other wedding attendees look out for, especially with the wedding season around the corner?

MJ: As the wedding season approaches, I suggest that brides and attendees look for versatile pieces that can transition seamlessly from day to night. I love using fabrics like silk, satin, and chiffon, which offer elegance and comfort. Intricate embellishments, like sequins and beads, add a glamorous touch, while vibrant hues bring a fresh energy to any ensemble. I also recommend embracing co-ord sets or mix-and-match separates for a modern twist, allowing for personalisation and individuality on this special occasion.

M: Have there been any shifts in the way brides are shopping for their trousseau, in your opinion?

MJ: Absolutely! I’ve noticed that brides are now focused on versatility and personalisation when shopping for their trousseau, looking for pieces they can wear beyond the wedding day. Comfort has become a top priority, with many opting for styles that allow them to move freely and enjoy their celebrations. There’s also a growing interest in sustainable and ethically sourced materials. Social media inspires brides with fresh ideas, making the process more thoughtful and curated to reflect each bride’s unique style and values.

M: Who do you envision being the muse for ‘Sailor Bride 2.0’?

MJ: I envision the muse for ‘Sailing Bride 2.0’ as a confident, free-spirited woman who embodies elegance and adventure. She appreciates the finer things in life but values comfort and versatility in her wardrobe. This muse is someone who effortlessly transitions from sun-soaked days on a yacht to chic evening gatherings, embracing both relaxation and style. She’s inspired by nature, exudes a sense of calm, and carries an air of sophistication that makes her the perfect representation of the collection’s essence.

M: The pre-buzz around the collection makes it seem like it’s going to be a no-brainer for the discerning bride as she packs for her honeymoon or any post-wedding getaways. What are your thoughts?

MJ: ‘Sailing Bride 2.0’ is designed with the discerning bride in mind, making it a no-brainer for her honeymoon or any post-wedding getaways. I wanted to create versatile pieces that allow her to pack light while still looking effortlessly chic for any occasion. Whether she’s lounging by the beach or attending a romantic dinner, each item transitions seamlessly, ensuring she feels comfortable and stylish. This collection captures the essence of relaxation and adventure, making it perfect for those memorable moments.

M: What’s next for the label?

MJ: As we move forward, I’m excited to explore new themes and inspirations that reflect the evolving needs of modern brides and their lifestyles. There are plans to expand the collection with even more versatile pieces that blend elegance with comfort, perfect for various occasions beyond the wedding day. Ultimately, my goal is to continue creating collections that celebrate individuality and the unique journeys of each woman.
